Rating: ★★
Review:
In ‘Down and Outing’ Tom and Jerry join a fat man who goes fishing. During the cartoon Tom tries to get rid of Jerry, mostly on expense of the man.
‘Down And Outing’ is the second of thirteen Tom & Jerry films by Gene Deitch, and like in the first, ‘Switchin’ Kitten‘, a rather inspired story (by Larz Bourne) is ruined by bad design, bad timing, bad animation and bad sounds. The fat man would become Gene Deitch’s best attempt on a recurring character, returning in ‘High Steaks‘ and ‘Sorry Safari‘ (both from 1962).
Watch ‘Down and Outing’ yourself and tell me what you think:
This is Tom & Jerry cartoon No. 116
To the previous Tom & Jerry cartoon: Switchin’ Kitten
To the next Tom & Jerry cartoon: It’s Greek to Me-Ow!

The fat man featured on those early sixties Gene Dietch produced Tom & Jerry cartoons looks remarkably like the Terrytoons janitor character called Clint Clobber.

Never thought of that, but you’re right!

Now I come to mention it, how come there are little or no Terrytoons cartoons released on sell-thru DVD? It’s a shame, I loved all of the various Terrytoons characters.

I have no idea. Terrytoons are now owned by CBS. They have released one DVD set ‘Mighty Mouse: The New Adventures’. Since then it has been silent. I think they simple don’t see it as a profitable idea.

It’s such a pity, they were great cartoons, from the 1930s to the late 1960s, the characters were just as good as Casper, Tom & Jerry, Popeye, etc.
